As the winter nears there seems to be a bit of a panic to get some shelter prepared for the many horses locally, I have been asked to build 3 different sized shelters lately, including a small one for our own 2 horses.
We drew up a basic design using a CAD programme for a shelter 6 metres by 3 metres which was only required to be clad on 2 sides because of it's location and also to allow good access and egress.
The design was agreed by the customer and subsequently priced and then the work began. I started by collecting the uprights which were substantial timbers albeit in softwood, they measured 150mm square, which I anticipated would be meaty enough to withstand any heavy duty pushing, shoving and leaning from Horses or Donkeys.
The post joints were made at home and then transported to the site and set into the ground 600mm deep after a coat of protection had been applied.
We then left them to set for a couple of days prior to fixing the roof timbers and panels.
Starting to take shape, all the roof timbers in place, ready for the roofing sheets and cladding.
The shelter was set to provide protection from a north easterly winter wind.
We clad only one side and the back as was the requirement of the customer.
Not quite finished here, it was eventually clad up to roof height.
